Noisy Book of Life Size
Collage, 24 x 18 in, 2026
This work is about noise. I used multiple forms of noise from daily life to interpret this concept.
The medium is collage, and the work is composed of 52 small collages. I printed out a large number of graphics and images, then tore out the parts I wanted. After that, I arranged and attached the paper pieces to create collages on a deck of playing cards.
These 52 types of noise are organized into four groups: traffic, home, digital, and public. They represent my understanding of life and how these noises have shaped my life, both in the past and present. For example, the most frequent noise in my current life in Toronto is the sound of the TTC. The most memorable noises from my past are the fireworks during the New Year and the sound of chopping vegetables in the kitchen.
I chose playing cards as the base of this project because people need to shuffle cards when playing, which symbolizes a restructuring of an existing situation. This reflects my experience as an international student: the past and present are mixed, and I need to create a new beginning from them.
