Devin Yang is a Toronto-based illustrator and concept artist. Born in Malaysia and raised in Hong Kong, he brings an attention to memory, atmosphere, and visual identity into narrative image-making. A recent graduate of OCAD University’s Illustration program, Devin works across digital painting, visual development, concept art, and sequential art. His practice focuses on dramatic composition, mood, and world-building for stories that need a strong visual identity without losing emotional nuance. He is interested in opportunities across animation, games, film, and publishing spaces that translate stories into illustrations.
Blinding Lights (Series)
All illustrations are from my art book “Blinding Lights”, a silent film-like sequential narrative about two youthful romantics working within a crime syndicate, progressively making a series of poorer life decisions until it ultimately catches up to them. Reflecting the sense of disillusionment of social advancement in Hong Kong, where despite modernity and its promises of prosperity and certainty, people now live in constant reaction instead of action for future plans. The struggle between apathy by looking for comfort through nostalgia, and living within the present is not only relevant in Toronto, but all metropolitan life.
“Blinding Lights” is the culmination of my search to develop a distinct style, inspired by my upbringing in Hong Kong as a Malaysian. I wanted to celebrate Hong Kong cinema, particularly the visual quality found in Wong Kar Wai’s films, along with the resurgence of 1980s-style pre-wedding photoshoots. The collection captures the essence of the dramatic yet ephemeral artificial lighting of Hong Kong’s past, to ultimately display how transient relationships are. Where despite tremendous pain in loss and absence, city life moves onward.
